Boxwalla Beauty Box Review

When I subscribed (and reviewed) the Boxwalla Book Box a couple months ago, I noticed that they also offered a beauty subscription box and I had to try it. The Boxwalla Beauty Box is a luxury skincare subscription box that sends the skincare obsessed products that use potent plant-based ingredients. I hadn’t planned on subscribing to Boxwalla beauty box quite so soon, but I quickly changed my mind when I received an email informing me that their August box would include products from the luxury African natural skincare/beauty brand LOVINAH and the luxury U.K.-based vegan skincare brand Votary. Boxwalla did not disappoint with this box and so I am here to tell you why you should consider subscribing to the Boxwalla beauty box!

How it Works

Boxwalla offers only one type of membership for its beauty box, a bimonthly (every other month) subscription for $49.95. The cutoff date for new subscriptions is the 1st of the month that the box ships and the last day to cancel your subscription is the 20th of the previous month. Also, the Boxwalla beauty subscription box offers free shipping within the U.S. (not sure whether that includes Alaska and Hawaii). But if you don’t want to commit to a subscription, Boxwalla offers one-time purchase boxes that include limited edition boxes and multi-box bundles. But just so that you know, these one-time boxes contain different products than boxes sent to subscribers.

For their beauty box, Boxwalla ensures that all the skincare products are made from nutrient-rich, nourishing ingredients that are properly preserved with safe yet effective preservatives. Boxwalla beauty products are free of cruelty (no carmine, no silk, no animal testing), parabens, sulphates, phthalates etc. (see the full list here). And if you are concerned that a box may contain products with an ingredient that you would like to avoid, Boxwalla encourages you to contact them and they will confirm whether or not the products in the current beauty box contain that ingredient.

Getting Boxwalla

I subscribed to the Boxwalla Beauty Box on July 10 and because it is a bimonthly box, I had to wait until the following month for my box to ship. My Boxwalla Beauty Box was shipped on August 18th and was delivered on August 24th. The Boxwalla Beauty Box arrived in a decorated cardboard box that resembles a shoebox (Boxwalla boxes are made from tree-free handmade paper) and was filled with paper stuffing and two of the three items were wrapped in brown paper to prevent leaks (the third item arrived in its original packaging). Unfortunately, when I opened the box, I noticed that one of the items had spilt and so I emailed Boxwalla informing them of the spillage (with photographic evidence) and they replaced the item and shipped it out on August 25th, one day after I contacted them. The beauty box contained three items:

What I Liked and Didn’t Like

I really loved Boxwalla’s customer service, they responded to my email about the spilt Votary night oil within hours and shipped the replacement the following day. I had offered to return the bottle I had received because there was still some product left in the bottle (about half of the product remained) but they didn’t want it returned. I also like the quality of products that Boxwalla sends, it is a bona fide luxury skincare box that features products from organic and vegan brands that aren’t sold in most retail and online beauty stores. And although Boxwalla Beauty Box is at the higher end of the price scale for beauty boxes, it does provide good value for money, because in total cost of the items I received was $240, almost 5 times the cost of the subscription. Another thing I liked is that anyone can preview the items included in the beauty box including non-members, so you always know what to expect in your box. And they offer free shipping and I love free shipping!

I also have a few critiques of the Boxwalla. One critique is that unlike other beauty subscription boxes, Boxwalla doesn't guarantee a minimum number of items or value of items in the box. For example, although my August box contained 3 items, the April 2020 box only contained 2 items and although the 2 products were high priced items, I would prefer a guarantee that I would receive at least 3 products per box. Also, Boxwalla doesn’t guarantee a minimum dollar value of each box and although this problem is solved by Boxwalla’s preview of the items in each box, it is common for beauty boxes to guarantee a minimum retail value for subscribers.

The Verdict

I highly recommend the Boxwalla Beauty Box based on customer service alone. They didn’t make a fuss about replacing the Votary night oil and they shipped it out to me very quickly and free of charge. I think people who are concerned about harsh chemicals in their skincare or those who prefer vegan or organic skincare products should definitely subscribe to the Boxwalla Beauty Box.
