Cocotique Box Review
Updated: Sep 6, 2020
As a relative newcomer to the natural hair movement, I had a lot to learn about my hair. For example, what was my hair’s texture (4b) and what was its porosity (low) and why is that important? And then after learning about my hair, I had read dozens of reviews to learn what ingredients to avoid and what to look for in my hair products. It was overwhelming! I spluttered along for months using a combination of YouTube videos, Amazon reviews and trial and error to learn which products worked for my hair but eventually, my patience ran out and I just wanted someone to just make these decisions for me. This is when I learnt about Cocotique, a Black owned beauty and self-care subscription box that promised the best in beauty, self-care, wellness and lifestyle products and what I can tell, they work with a lot of Black owned hair and beauty brands and so for me, Cocotique was a win-win and I had to try it.
How it Works
Cocotique offers four different subscription levels. The monthly subscription costs $25 and you can cancel anytime after the first box is shipped and three pre-paid subscription plans: 3-months for $66, 6-months for $126 and 12-months for $228, which cannot be cancelled until the term ends. Monthly subscriptions renew on the 10th of the month and cancellations must be made by the last day of the previous month. Cocotique promises 5-8 full size and deluxe sample sized beauty, self-care and lifestyle products for women of color.
Cocotique also has an online store where you can buy the boxes without a subscription for the same price as subscribers. And, Cocotique’s online store sells individual items that are in their boxes.
Becoming a COCOBelle
I subscribed to Cocotique on June 9th and my box shipped on June 27th and it arrived on June 29th. Regardless of when you subscribe, the Cocotique box ships once a month during the 15th to 20th of the month. However, if you purchase a previous month’s box without a subscription through Cocotique’s online store, the box will ship within 48 to 72 hours. Here are the items I received in my June box:
Innate Instant Hydrating Conditioner (full size) - $10.99
Innate Anti Frizz Texture Cream (full size) - $10.99
Innate Anti Frizz Straightening Cream (full size) - $ 10.99
Innate Fix Hold Mist (full size) - $10.99
Kiss Professional Pro Touch Glow & Bronze Cream (full size) - $6.99
Reshma Beauty Honey & Lemon Face Wash (full size) - $6.99
Ruby Kisses RK Volumizing Waterproof Mascara (full size) - $3.99
Twisted Sista Luxurious Clarifying Shampoo (full size) - $8.99
Underguard Refresh Wipes for Men and Teens (deluxe sample size) - $7.99 (price for full sized product)
What I Liked and Didn’t Like
I love the value for money with Cocotique, I got $87 worth of full-sized products for only $25! I checked out previous boxes on their online store and it does not seem as if June’s box was unusual in that regard, every month’s box offers good value for money. Also, I loved the number of full-sized products, out of a box of 11 items, 9 products (or 10 if you count the mini jade roller) were full sized. And I liked that the online store, sells individual items, so you don’t have to scour the web looking for a product from your box that you loved and used way too quickly. Even better, Cocotique offers a number of coupons to help you save even more money. And finally, because Cocoqitue works with such a wide range of brands, their store has a wide selection of items from a broad range of brands, for example, I was pleasantly surprised to see MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Ultra HD Foundation on their site, although only two shades were available.
I do have a couple small critiques of the Cocotique box. One critique is that although the box is curated very evenly between beauty and hair products, the best value (at least in the June box), was in the hair products. In fact, most of the beauty products seemed to be an afterthought and the inclusion of a bronzing cream for a box curated for women of color was rather puzzling because it is unlikely a one-color-fits-all bronzer would work for most subscribers. The face wash and the jade roller were definitely good inclusions though because I have always wanted to try a jade roller and you can never have too many face washes. And another small critique was that Cocotique sent a coupon that would have discounted my first month’s box, but it arrived after I had already purchased my subscription. When I emailed Cocotique to see if I could have the coupon applied to my new subscription, I got an auto-reply email response along with a message saying that someone would respond to me within 24-48 hours excluding weekends, but I never got a response. Admittedly, I never followed-up but I was disappointed because I hate feeling as if I threw away money and that is how I feel whenever I don’t use coupons.
I highly recommend Cocotique and if you are looking for a box that will replace your monthly hair care purchases, this you definitely want to get this box. I expected a more even mix of full sized to deluxe sample sized items but because I received so many full-sized items (oh, the horror J) that I had to skip a month in order to make sure I used them all before getting the next box. But again, well worth the cost of subscription!
