Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co Subscription Review

Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co is a monthly subscription box that sends members handmade, one-of-a-kind scented soy wax products like candles and wax melts. Each Cowboy & Cricket Candle is hand-poured in Albuquerque, NM and feature a scent recipe crafted exclusively for customers. Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co offers new scents every month and subscribers have the option to choose their own scent from a number of clever and nerdy themes. Cowboy & Cricket Candle is my first home subscription box and I was excited to try it because I love to keep my house smelling great, especially during the winter when I can’t keep my sliding door and windows open to let in fresh air. I was attracted to Cowboy & Cricket because it is reasonably priced and I loved their candles' themes and ingredients, but keep reading to learn what else I liked about Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co and a few of the things I didn't like about this subscription.

How it Works

Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co offers multiple subscription and payment options: Candle of the Month ($15 per month), Pick Your Scent Candle ($18 per month), Double the Candles ($40 per month), Wax Melt of the Month ($10 per month), Pick Your Scent Wax Melt ($12) and Double the Melts ($22 per month). Each subscription plan comes with 3, 6 and 12 month prepaid payment options and free shipping. Additionally, all subscription options except the Pick Your Own Scent Candle and Pick Your Own Scent Wax Melt, come with a little treat related to that month’s theme.

But, if you don't want to commit to a subscription, Cowboy & Candle Co has an online store on Esty, where you can buy individual candles and wax melts and subscribers receive a discount when they shop at the online store.

Getting Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co.

I subscribed to Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co on October 21 and it was shipped on October 30 and delivered on November 5th. Although I subscribed to the Candle of the Month plan, Cowboy & Cricket sent an email on October 26 giving me the option to choose 1 candle from any of their signature scents or from any of the next 3 months’ seasonal scents. The 3 seasonal scents were: Salem, which had notes of firewood, red ginger saffron and dried rose petals; Krampus, which had notes of peppermint chocolate bark and; A Bee, A Key and a Sword, which had notes of honey, mahogany and deep earth. I did not respond to the email within the 3-day timeframe and so I was sent the default seasonal scent for October. Cowboy & Cricket is shipped in a small plain white box and the candle was inside a 4 oz tin can that was wrapped in tissue paper:

What I Liked and Didn’t Like

I loved the smell of the Salem scented candle, it had a unique and subtle scent that reminded me of being in a spa. I mostly smelt the rose petals, which was very relaxing, but the firewood and saffron gave the candle a warm fragrance that made it perfect for the Fall. Another thing I liked about the Cowboy & Cricket candle is the chic brushed nickel container (with a lid) that it came in. Cowboy & Cricket’s price point was another positive because with subscriptions starting as low as $15 a month, it is one of the more affordable candle subscription boxes. Finally, I love that Cowboy & Cricket offers wax melts for those who prefer a flame free option.

But, there were a couple things I didn’t like about the Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co subscription. First, the website says that subscribers can expect a small goodie with their candle but the only other thing included in my box was a small card with lines for me to write down my 3 favorite Cowboy & Cricket candle scents. Another disappointment was the size of the candle. Although Cowboy & Cricket makes it clear that their candles are 4 ounces, seeing the actual size of the candle was another story - its small size meant that the candle provided only about 16 hours of burn time*. I think Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co should offer multiple size options because I would have loved to have a larger version of the Salem candle.

The Verdict

I recommend Cowboy & Cricket to those who love filing their homes with exotic, unique fragrances you won't find anywhere else. And, although Cowboy & Cricket candles cost more than grocery store candles, Cowboy & Cricket candles don't have the same harsh scent and they burn much cleaner.

* I burnt the candle an average of 2 ½ hours for 6 days and then approximately 1 hour on the 7th day.
