MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum

Updated: 5 days ago

MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum (10mL, $192) is a fast acting, ultra-targeted serum that addresses UV-activated hyperpigmentation, age spots and helps reduce skin tone imperfections. Brighten & Perfect Corrective Serum combines a potent complex of active ingredients and an optimal dosage of 10% stabilized Vitamin C to address skin discoloration. This corrective serum works deep to help protect elasticity, stimulate collagen synthesis and create a shield to protect against environmental aggressors resulting in a strengthened, refined and brightened skin tone. MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect is vegan and suitable for all skin types.

Like all high-end serums, MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect contains peptides, customizable cell messenger proteins that can be expensive to research and produce. In her article for Harper’s Bazaar, beauty writer Rebecca Norris explains that peptides are short chains of amino acids that tell the body to produce even more collagen, one of the major building blocks of skin. Norris cites cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson, who further explains that peptides are comprised of up to 50 amino acids, making them very mutable, meaning “all you have to do is add, subtract, or replace one of those amino acids and then you have a new peptide that might have a different function”. Some of the functions that peptides perform in skincare include smoothing, firming, reducing inflammation and hydration. Skincare brand Paula’s Choice has an excellent article on peptides, where it advises costumers that peptides need ‘friends’ in the form of “supporting ingredients to help address all the needs of skin”. And, when peptides are blended with antioxidants (such as Vitamin C), skin smoothing ingredients and skin-replenishing ingredients, they can address multiple sings of aging.

Bright & Perfect also contains another powerhouse ingredient called sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is a derivative of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), specifically, it’s a salt form of HA that has a lower molecular weight than HA so it’s more easily absorbed into pores. In another interview with Jessica DeFino from The Zoe Report, Robinson explains that sodium hyaluronate “has the ability to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin, and also attracts and binds water … this effect can plump the skin, thus reducing the look of wrinkles and making skin younger-looking”.

Peptides and sodium hyaluronate in combination with vitamin C, which has been proven to decrease skin damage caused by UV light and contribute to photoprotection and collagen synthesis, make MZ Skin Bright & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum a great option for those who want to take their skincare to the next level. Read on to learn what I thought about this luxury vitamin C serum with the luxury price tag.

My Take

I love high-end skincare but $390 for a vitamin C serum is a bit too steep for me, so I received my super deluxe size of MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C corrective serum in my June MINTD box, a luxury skincare subscription box that ships from the United Kingdom (read my review of MINTD Box here). The packaging of my super deluxe sample size (10mL/0.33 fl. oz) is similar to the packaging of the full-sized product – a clear glass bottle with a pump top dispenser. The vitamin C serum is a lightweight, white cream that is quickly absorbed in the skin and has a light floral fragrance. I used Bright & Perfect twice daily, in the mornings after my cleanser, toner and essence but before my sunscreen and at night as the last step in my skincare routine. I used 1-2 pumps and with my ring finger dotted the serum on both cheeks, forehead and chin and then massaged into my skin with upward strokes.

I wasn’t expecting much MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect serum because I had just finished my bottle of SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF with Ferulic Acid (read my review here), which is the gold -standard of vitamin C serums and I never believed any other vitamin C serum could come close. But I was wrong, very wrong. I loved how lightweight the Brighten & Perfect serum was because in the mornings, I applied sunscreen after Brighten & Perfect and I didn’t want to wear a heavy serum and then layer sunscreen over it. Brighten & Perfect also goes on smoothly, gliding over the surface of the skin and doesn’t leave your face feeling sticky. Another thing I loved about Brighten and Perfect is how long it lasts; my deluxe sample size was 10ml or 0.33 fl. oz. and it lasted about 7 weeks with twice daily usage.

The thing I loved most about MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum was how it quickly and completely it faded discoloration on my face. Seriously, I have never had an over-the-counter product fade spots this quickly and completely without the use of hydroquinone (a skin-lightening agent with a host of negative side effects), especially for those with darker complexions. I could gush all day long about Brighten and Perfect and its effect on hyperpigmentation, it is that good. I also loved that it brightened my skin and did not cause breakouts. In fact, I think it actually prevented break outs (although this is not a claim made by MZ Skin) because despite having acne-prone skin, the entire time I used Brighten & Protect, I did not get dreaded maskne - acne and irritation from wearing a mask. Better yet, after using Brighten & Protect for a week, I was able to go out without wearing makeup at all (yes, I occasionally wear make-up when I go out despite the stains it makes on the inside of my mask) and I felt very confident doing so, which is a big deal for someone who has been in and out of dermatologists’ offices since the age of 13!

There are two critiques I have of MZ Skin Brighten & Perfect 10% Vitamin C Corrective Serum. The first is the smell, I actually have this problem with all MZ Skin products, I have tried so far. The smell isn’t overpowering, and it doesn’t last but I just don’t like it. Every time I put the serum on, I would think, “I really don’t like this fragrance” but just as quickly I would forget about it because Brighten & Perfect doesn’t sit on the surface of the skin, so the smell doesn’t last. The other critique is the price. I get it, products that are as effective as Brighten & Perfect and are intended for luxury skincare customers come with a steep price tag but the cost of the full-size version of this product is a whopping $390 and it only 30ml! This means that at $192, the 10ml deluxe travel size, which is only a third of the full size bottle, is very over-priced.

I highly, highly recommend this product to those who want to use a product that fades dark spots and age spots quickly and effectively without hydroquinone. Many will balk at the price but if you can afford it, I say go for it because you will not regret it. Sure, there are other vitamin C serums that offer similar benefits for far less money, but if my deluxe travel size bottle of Brighten & Perfect has shown me anything, it is that a really good skincare product can leave an impression with just 10ml!
