MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex

MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex (14ml, $149) is a firming eye cream that contains a tripeptide to stimulate collagen and elastin. Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract detoxifies and strengthens capillaries, reducing dark circles and puffiness. Hyaluronic acid (HA) and ceramides restore moisture and plump and smooth fine lines, restoring suppleness around the eyes. Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex is suitable for all skin types and is ophthalmologically tested to ensure there is no irritation to the eye.

Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract, or Persian Silk Tree Bark Extract, is one of the main ingredients of MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Eye Complex. Albizia Julibrissin is a species of tree native to southwestern and eastern Asia, where its flowers and stem bark are used to make medicine. Albizia is most commonly taken orally for anxiety, depression and insomnia but its skincare benefits come from its high concentration of antioxidants, which helps the skin repair itself. In fact, this study found that the stem bark of the albizia julibrissin was 6 times stronger than L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) at scavenging damaging free radicals, one of the main culprits behind skin aging.

In skincare products, albizia julibrissin is used to protect against glycation, a process that occurs when excess sugar molecules attach themselves to other molecules, like proteins and fats, causing them to become stiff and inflexible. One of the proteins that is affected by these excess sugar molecules is collagen which results in the loss of the skin’s elasticity. Dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams, who is cited in the article linked to above, says “glycation also causes free radical formation, oxidative stress and inflammation, all of which accelerate aging”. Albizia julibrissin is part of an anti-glycation skin care regimen - beneficial for those who have a diet high in sugars – as it prevents sugar molecules from distorting collagen proteins. Other skincare uses for Albizia julibrissin include evening skin tone, improving texture and reducing dark circles by strengthening the microcapillary system in the body.

Soothe & Smooth Activating Eye Complex also contains tripeptides, a skincare ingredient that usually means a hefty price tag. Peptides are strings of amino acids – the building blocks that make up proteins in the collagen in the skin, without which the skin loses its structure and function, or, in other words, its texture and overall appearance. As we get older our body loses collagen, but it can be replaced with the right topical skincare product(s). There are hundreds of peptides, but only a few specific peptides are more effective for the skin than others. Tripeptides are three amino acids molecules joined together. In the skincare industry, tripeptide compounds are formulated to work together to target specific skincare concerns, for example, aging or hydration.

MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex contains Myristoyl Tripeptide-31, a skin-restoring synthetic peptide made from combining the fatty acid myristic acid with tripeptide 31. Myristoyl Tripeptide-31 is believed to have a retinol-like effect on the skin’s appearance and helps improve texture, tone and visible firmness. The tripeptides in MZ Skin’s Soothe and Smooth Eye Complex are used to target the renewal of skin cells though the regeneration of collagen. The Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Cream also contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides, two ingredients that help keep the skin moisturized by sealing in moisture.

My Take

I received a jar of MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex in my June MINTD box, a luxury skincare subscription box that ships from the United Kingdom (you can read my review of MINTD Box here). The Collagen Activating Eye Complex comes in a small pink jar with a wide mouth for easy dispensing. The eye complex is a lightweight white cream with a floral scent. I used the eye cream in the mornings and at night, after cleansing, toning and applying an essence but before applying sunscreen in the mornings or before applying a serum or heavy moisturizer at night. Using my ring finger, I applied a small amount of the Collagen Activating Eye Complex, gently tapping it into the area under and above the eye orbital area.

The most immediate result I noticed after using the Collagen Activating Eye Complex for a few days was that the skin around my eye did not feel tight (due to dryness) halfway through the day or after waking up in the morning. The skin around my eyes are always one of the driest areas on my normally oily face because I suffer from dry eyes and my eye drops always run down the sides and corners of my eyes after application and I have to wipe the excess eye lubricant away, removing any moisturizer and/or serum in the eye orbital area in the process. But, after using the Collagen Activating Eye Complex, the skin around my eyes no longer felt dry after re-applying eye drops throughout the day, even when I used a tissue to dab away excess eye drops.

Also, I liked that the Soothe & Smooth Eye Complex increased the elasticity in the skin around my eye. I do not have wrinkles (yet) so I can't speak to the Eye Complex's claim of reducing wrinkle depth but it did increase skin elasticity around my eyes after a couple weeks of use. Another thing I liked was that the Eye Complex did not burn my eyes when I accidentally applied it a bit too close to the bottom rim of my eye. Additionally, I loved the packaging of the Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex because the open jar allowed me to get all the product and none of it was wasted. The open jar made it easy to return excess product to the container.

Unfortunately, the result that I was most looking forward to – removing dark circles – took a lot longer to achieve and the results were not as noticeable as I had hoped. In fact, I was close to the end of my jar of the Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex before I noticed any brightening in my undereye area and even then, it was not a dramatic difference, considering I religiously applied the eye cream twice a day and with sunscreen for two months. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation is more difficult to get rid of in people with darker skin tones, but I really wanted this to work for me! With that being said, if you have a lighter complexion then this may very well work for your dark under eyes circles, but if you have a dark skin tone, don’t expect a dramatic difference in dark circles under the eyes with this product.

Other minor complaints/critiques about MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex include its fragrance and discomfort when accidentally applied to the upper eyelid. The MZ Skin Eye Complex is the third product I have tried from MZ Skin and the second I have used with a fragrance that I did not like (read my review of MZ Skin Vitamin C Corrective Serum here). Although the fragrance in the Eye Complex is not overpowering but it was strong enough that I noticed that I didn’t like it every time I put it on. Another critique is that the eye cream did cause some discomfort if I accidentally applied it to my upper eye lid. The Eye Complex didn’t burn my eyes, but it was uncomfortable, and I always had to wash it off, which was annoying considering the price of the product.

I recommend MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex to those with sensitive eyes that are easily irritated when their moisturizer and/or sunscreen is applied too close to the eye area. I also recommend it for those who want to improve the elasticity of skin around the eyes, however, the jury is still out on whether these gains are long-term or if they only last as long as you use this product. And although I am unable to comment on the Collagen Activating Eye Complex’s ability to reduce wrinkle depth, it is so moisturizing in the dry Utah climate that this extra moisture likely helps with reducing fine lines caused by dry skin. If you have a dark complexion/skin tone and are looking for an eye cream that will reduce dark circles, you may want to keep looking or commit to at least two bottles of MZ Skin Soothe & Smooth Collagen Activating Eye Complex before noticing any dramatic results.
