Vellabox Subscription Review

Vellabox is a monthly candle subscription box that sends members high-quality, small-batch, all-natural candles from artisans across the U.S. Vellabox prides itself on sending members candles made from 100% natural wax that do not contain paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Instead, Vellabox candles feature soy, coconut or vegetable wax, cotton braided wicks, premium fragrance and essential oils. Vellabox highlights a different candle maker in each box and sends their best seasonally appropriate scents that you won’t find in most big box retailers. Vellabox also takes a sustainable approach when choosing packaging materials and so their box is intentionally minimalistic, with no bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or unnecessary waste.

How it Works

Vellabox has 3 subscription options: the Lucerna Box, the Ignis Box and the Vivere Box. The Lucerna Box sends subscribers a 4 oz candle monthly (~ 25 hours of burn time) and a surprise gift for $10/per month + $3 shipping. The Ignis Box sends members an 8 oz candle (~ 50 hours of burn time) and a surprise gift for $20/per month + $3 shipping. And the Vivere Box sends an 8 oz and a 4 oz candle and a surprise gift for $30/per month + free shipping. All subscription options are available in monthly, 6-month and 12-month prepaid options.

Vellabox also has a candle shop for those who do not want to purchase a subscription as well as gift subscriptions and gift cards.

Getting Vellabox

I subscribed to the Ignis Box on October 27 and it was shipped on October 28 and I received it on November 3. The subscription arrived in a brown cardboard box with a candle flame printed on the top of the box and “vellabox” printed on the side. When I opened the box, the candle was inside in a drawstring bag with a leaf print. The box also contained a small bonus gift and 3 informational cards. The first card was a welcome message from Vellabox, the second card gave information on how to burn a candle and the third card provided information on the two featured candles for that month: Pumpkin Spice and Apple Orchard (Vivere subscription only) including the fragrance notes of each candle, where they can be purchased and coupon codes for the candle-maker and the bonus gift. Here are the items included in my Vellabox:

What I Liked and Didn’t Like

I loved the smell of this candle! The pumpkin spice candle’s top notes of ginger, cinnamon and clove were warm and spicy – perfect for Fall! I also loved that the fragrance filled the entire second floor of my home, including the kitchen, dining room, living room and tv area. Vellabox promises that its 8-ounce candles have at least 50 hours of burn time and my candle gave me a long 57 hours of burn time! Finally, I loved that Vellabox introduced me to new candle maker – Aster Candle based in Rhode Island. Without Vellabox, I would have never known about Aster Candle and now I plan to join Aster Candle's candle subscription service called the Candle Club.

I only had two small critiques of the candle I received. The first was that the Pumpkin Spice candle was not very visually appealing, it was a mason jar with a white label. I understand that these candles are from small, artisan candle makers so you should expect simple, no-frills packaging but the two things are not mutually exclusive. It is possible to have a simple, no-frills container and also have a candle that is visually appealing, for example, Cowboy & Cricket Candle Co also features handmade candles but their brushed nickel containers are very pretty. Another dislike was that the candle had an uneven burn, so I had to push down the edges of the candle so that the wick did not burn out before all the wax was consumed. I think having a larger wick would have helped with the uneven burn.

The Verdict

I highly recommend the Vellabox candle subscription for candle connoisseurs and purists who prefer non-parrafin wax candles and love to discover new candle makers. Vellabox will also appeal to those who do not like the harsh, one-note fragrance candles that are available at the grocery store. The candles you get from Vellabox will burn cleanly and you can be assured of candle’s burn time based on your subscription. My biggest endorsement of Vellabox is that since getting this subscription in November, I have purchased additional candles from Vellabox and I have loved all my candles so far!
